APAC’s spring Professional Development Seminars

The WSU Administrative Professional Advisory Council is offering professional development seminars on a wide range of topics for WSU staff and faculty. All courses are available via videoconference.

Ally training
By Matthew Jeffries, Director of Gender Identity/Expression and Sexual Orientation
This interactive training is designed to give the participant an introduction to issues faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. The training is interspersed with short video clips to illustrate specific concepts and also includes several activities that provide the participants with opportunities to work individually and in small groups to discuss new concepts and vocabulary. Activities focus on conceptualizing the influences of identity, vocabulary, role playing, and working in small groups to process scenarios.

Coaching’s role in student success

Coaching is an underutilized leadership style and approach to communication that actively engages four fundamental capabilities of Emotional Intelligence across four leadership styles to positively impact organizational climate. It, therefore, harnesses EI more effectively than other identified leadership styles to show “markedly positive” impact on climate. EI drivers connected with a relevant leadership style will produce better organizational climate, productivity, 5 – 10 percent student retention and completion when used by advisers/counselors, and 20 percent increases to target performance indicators. This presentation will detail how coaching integrates EI into a practical model for effective communication, employee development and leadership.

Individual problem solving: hurdles and strategies

Almost all individual decisions, from how to invest one’s money to what to have for breakfast, are influenced by personal biases. In most situations this is not a problem, and we are able to successfully navigate through the day. However, sometimes our biases can be so strong that they lead us away from the best, or even an acceptable, solution, and toward a decision that will cause difficulty in the long run. In this session, we will review the most common decision biases, discuss why they exist, and look at what can be done to overcome those biases when they threaten decision quality.
