“Smith grants have supported the innovative ideas of dozens of faculty members for many years, and the resulting projects and courses have made impacts across the university,” said Mary F. Wack, WSU vice provost for undergraduate education. “We anticipate receiving many great proposals this year that detail plans to further benefit the WSU community.”

New Smith grant recipients will be announced in April 2018. Awards can be used as summer salary, and benefits are paid from the award amount. Eligible applicants cannot have received Smith grants in the past four years, and must be faculty with instructional responsibilities appointed half-time or more, and continuing employment in academic year 2018-19. A final project report is due in August 2019.

Application requirements include a project overview, work plan, citation list, and the endorsement of the applicant’s chair. Materials must address the scope of impact of the proposal, such as whether a course is for majors or a large UCORE course, or is the approach translatable to other contexts, disciplines, or institutions. Materials must also describe how the achievement of the work will be sustained by the department and shared with the WSU community.

Details are online at http://vpue.wsu.edu under the “faculty grants” tab.

The Samuel H. and Patricia W. Smith Teaching and Learning Endowment was established in 2000 when WSU President Smith retired after 15 years of service to the university. The fund’s purpose is to recognize and reward innovative ideas to enhance teaching and learning at WSU.

In years since, thanks to awards made from the fund, thousands of undergraduates have benefited from the implementation of the educational innovations, programs, and projects resulting from Smith grants, said Wack.
